D.K. Metcalf Ditches walking boot
Mon, May 2, 2022, 4:23 PM
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Saturday that Metcalf no longer is using a walking boot to protect his surgically repaired left foot, Liz Mathews of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Carroll also noted that Metcalf has resumed running, though presumably not yet at 100 percent after he underwent foot surgery in February. The 24-year-old is expected to continue his rehab into the spring, so he may not be fully cleared before OTAs come to an end. Metcalf should be at or near full strength by training camp in late July, if not minicamp in mid-June, when he and Tyler Lockett will headline a new-look Seattle passing game that will be helmed by a yet-to-be-determined starter following Russell Wilson's move to Denver earlier in the offseason. The Seahawks didn't add to the position group through the draft over the weekend, tentatively leaving Drew Lock, Geno Smith and Jacob Eason to compete for the starting job.
Jacob Eason
Jacob Eason Likely aiming for backup duties
Sun, May 1, 2022, 11:49 AM
Eason is expected to compete for the backup quarterback job after Seattle didn't draft a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Washington product was picked by the Colts in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, but he has thrown just five regular-season passes. Drew Lock and Geno Smith are expected to be the main candidates for the starting quarterback job, and Eason likely would need to overperform to have a true shot at the starting gig. However, Eason is a prototypical quarterback, as he stands at 6-foot-6, 227 pounds and has a cannon for an arm. It wouldn't be surprising if the Seahawks kept him around as the No. 3 quarterback with hopes the 24-year-old can develop into a suitable NFL quarterback.
Geno Smith
Geno Smith Competing for starting job
Sun, May 1, 2022, 11:40 AM
Smith is expected to compete with Drew Lock and Jacob Eason for the starting quarterback job after the Seahawks didn't select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks decided to use all nine of their draft picks to reinforce other positions, signaling that they're content with letting Smith, Lock and, to a lesser extent, Eason battle for the starting job this summer. Smith, 32, played four games (three starts) while Russell Wilson was rehabbing a finger injury last season. He won just one game and completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 702 yards (7.4 YPA), five touchdowns and an interception while adding another 42 yards and a score on the ground.
Drew Lock
Drew Lock Survives draft day
Sun, May 1, 2022, 11:24 AM
Lock is expected to compete with Geno Smith and Jacob Eason for the starting quarterback job after the Seahawks didn't select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: There was only one quarterback drafted in the first 73 picks, and despite having four picks in that stretch, the Seahawks opted to upgrade their offensive line and add a high-end running back and edge rusher. That's good news for Lock, who was part of the trade package that the Seahawks received for Russell Wilson. Lock has a big arm but was mediocre over 24 games (21 starts) with the Broncos over the last three years, completing 59.3 percent of his passes for 4,740 yards (6.7 YPA), 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also ran for 285 yards and five scores. Unless the Seahawks bring in Baker Mayfield via trade or a veteran in free agency, the main competition in training camp will be between Lock and Smith while Eason makes a longshot bid.
DK Metcalf
D.K. Metcalf No extension talks yet
Thu, Apr 21, 2022, 3:10 PM
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks haven't directly addressed the issue of a new contract for Metcalf, who showed up for the start of the voluntary offseason program while continuing his rehab from foot surgery, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: It wouldn't have been a surprise if Metcalf hadn't reported, considering he's rehabbing from surgery and oft-mentioned in trade rumors as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. He'll likely miss spring practices after foot surgery this winter, but the 24-year-old wideout should be ready for training camp and Week 1
Geno Smith
Geno Smith Has contract reworked
Tue, Apr 19, 2022, 6:20 PM
The NFL disapproved the contract Smith signed with the Seahawks on April 14, but the issue was amended Tuesday, and new terms of the deal were confirmed, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Per Rapoport, Smith will have a base salary of $3.5 million in 2022, with the potential for $3.5 million in incentives. Smith is a candidate to replace Russell Wilson after Seattle dealt the long-time signal-caller to Denver back in March. As a part of that trade, the Seahawks received three-year pro Drew Lock, and the team remains a candidate to add to the quarterback room this offseason. As it stands, Smith has the most experience with the team's current coaching staff, making five appearances (1-2 as a starter) over the last two seasons. Overall, he completed 69 of 100 passes for 735 yards, five touchdowns and one interception and recorded 11 carries for 40 yards and another score in those games.
Geno Smith
Geno Smith Back with Seahawks
Thu, Apr 14, 2022, 1:17 PM
The Seahawks have re-signed Smith, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Per Condotta, Smith's one-year deal with Seattle carries a base value in the $4 million range, plus incentives. Now that he's back in the fold, Smith bolsters a QB group that also currently includes Drew Lock and Jacob Eason. It's still possible that the Seahawks could add a veteran option such as Baker Mayfield or draft a signal-caller later this month, but for now Smith figures to have a chance to compete for the vacated starting spot created by the offseason trade of Russell Wilson.
Noah Fant
Noah Fant Gets fifth-year option
Tue, Apr 12, 2022, 2:50 PM
The Seahawks picked up the fifth-year option on Fant's rookie contract Tuesday, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: The 2019 first-round pick was part of the March trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos. While Fant's prospects for 2022 partially hinge on Drew Lock, another part of the package received by the Seahawks, improving or the team finding a better quarterback, there's a good chance the 24-year-old tight end will have more than one year to figure things out in Seattle. The fifth-year option is for a fully guaranteed $6.85 million, a reasonable figure from the team's point of view even if Fant hasn't quite lived up to the standards of a 20th overall draft pick. The upcoming season will be his fourth in the NFL, with the option then applying to 2023.

D.K. Metcalf Extension not yet being discussed
Tue, Mar 29, 2022, 8:58 AM
Coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday when asked about a potential contract extension for Metcalf (foot) "we have not gotten to that topic yet specifically because we've got so many other things going on," Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Metcalf is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and with longtime franchise leader Russell Wilson having been traded to the Broncos, Seattle's roster is no doubt facing a transition to a new era. Carroll did say that the Seahawks "intend for [Metcalf] to be with us" for the long-term, but at least in the early stages of the offseason, it appears that extending the 2019 second-round pick hasn't ranked atop the team's list of priorities. Per Condotta, Carroll appeared to indicate that extensions will be dealt with after the free agency period has completely run its course. For the time being Drew Lock stands atop the depth chart, but it seems likely that Seattle will add more options to the quarterback room via trade, free agency, or April's draft, in which the team holds the No. 9 overall pick.
Will Dissly
Will Dissly Signs three-year deal with Seattle
Mon, Mar 14, 2022, 2:52 PM
Dissly is signing a three-year contract with the Seahawks, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The 2018 fourth-round pick will stick with the only team he's ever played for, presumably working as the No. 2 TE in a blocking-focused role. Dissly did show some receiving chops early in his career, but he's never been especially fast and hasn't made as much of an impact in the passing game since he suffered major injuries his first two seasons in the NFL. He isn't likely to have much fantasy value behind fellow tight end Noah Fant, who is headed from Denver to Seattle as part of the Russell Wilson trade. Gerald Everett, meanwhile, figures to sign elsewhere.
DK Metcalf
DK Metcalf QB downgrade in contract year
Wed, Mar 9, 2022, 12:46 PM
Metcalf (foot) will likely have a downgrade at quarterback in 2022 after the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Broncos on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Metcalf took a step back last year but still managed to post a 75-967-12 line through 17 games despite dealing with a lingering foot injury for most of the season. Head coach Pete Carroll said last week that Metcalf underwent a minor offseason procedure in February to remove a screw from his left foot, but the 24-year-old wideout should be good to go for training camp, if not OTAs. The bigger concern is the changing of the guard at quarterback and the Seahawks' commitment to a rebuild. Metcalf had a strong connection with Wilson, recording 3,170 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns through his first three NFL seasons. Now, Drew Lock -- who has a career 6.7 YPA and a 59.3 completion percentage -- is seemingly the top QB in Seattle for now, though the Seahawks will likely pick a QB in the draft or bring one in via trade or free agency. Metcalf may have the pedigree to overcome a severe downgrade at QB, but this likely isn't the type of turbulence he wanted in his contract season.
Tyler Lockett
Tyler Lockett QB downgrade in store
Wed, Mar 9, 2022, 10:15 AM
The Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Broncos on Tuesday, meaning Lockett will likely have a downgrade at quarterback in 2022, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Lockett, who will turn 30 years old in September, signed a four-year, $69.2 million contract with the Seahawks in March of 2021, and he was probably expecting that Wilson would be his signal-caller for the remainder of that deal. Instead, the Seahawks established their commitment to the rebuild by trading the nine-time Pro Bowler. The Seahawks received quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, DE Shelby Harris along with an assortment of picks in return. While they may also draft a QB or sign one in free agency, it's basically certain that the Seahawks will have a significant downgrade under center. Furthermore, Fant adds more competition for targets, too. Lockett -- who has only played three NFL games without Wilson -- is still poised to be the 1B option in this offense, but there's plenty of ambiguity for the time being.
Noah Fant
Noah Fant Part of Wilson deal
Tue, Mar 8, 2022, 1:45 PM
The Broncos dealt Fant, quarterback Drew Lock, defensive end Shelby Harris and five draft picks to the Seahawks for Russell Wilson and a fourth-round pick Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: With the move, Fant potentially will have some familiarity with the potential starting quarterback in his new locale, having played with Lock in each of his three seasons to date. Overall, Fant has 170 catches and 10 touchdowns in 47 career games while racking up at least 500 yards each year. The 2019 first-rounder should slot in as the Seahawks' top tight end in 2022.
Drew Lock
Drew Lock Sent to Seattle
Tue, Mar 8, 2022, 1:38 PM
The Broncos dealt Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive end Shelby Harris and five draft picks to the Seahawks for Russell Wilson and a fourth-round pick Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: A 2019 second-rounder, Lock has struggled when he's stepped foot on the field, completing 59.3 percent of his passes for 4,740 yards, 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in 24 appearances while compiling an 8-13 record as a starter. Once the trade is on the books, Lock and Jacob Eason will be the only signal-callers on Seattle's roster, meaning the team likely will continue to tinker with the QB room as the offseason goes on.
Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson Reportedly on the move
Tue, Mar 8, 2022, 12:56 PM
The Seahawks have reportedly agreed to terms on a deal to send Wilson to the Broncos, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Analysis: The report notes that such an outcome is pending a physical and Wilson's approval. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the looming blockbuster transaction is expected to include multiple first-round draft picks as well as additional draft choices and players.
DK Metcalf
DK Metcalf Foot procedure clarified
Thu, Mar 3, 2022, 4:37 PM
Coach Pete Carroll clarified Wednesday that Metcalf underwent a minor offseason procedure to remove a screw from his left foot, Liz Matthews of USA Today reports. "They fixed a surgery that he had on his foot a couple of years back," Carroll noted of the wideout, whose practice reps were managed last season as he dealt with a lingering foot issue. "They just had to go in there and adjust some stuff in his foot. It bothered him all year long."
Analysis: Though the report doesn't specify when the 2019 second-rounder will be able work fully on the field, the hope is that by addressing the issue, Metcalf will be able to practice on a regular basis this coming season. Despite his foot woes, Metcalf played all 17 of Seattle's games last season en route to catching 75 of his 129 targets for 967 yards and career-high 12 TDs. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder is set to continue to combine with Tyler Lockett in 2022 to form a talented 1-2 punch atop the team's wideout depth chart.
DK Metcalf
DK Metcalf Recovering from foot surgery
Tue, Feb 15, 2022, 9:22 AM
Metcalf recently had surgery to remove a screw from his left foot, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Metcalf told Bleacher Report's Taylor Rooks that he had surgery shortly after the conclusion of the 2021 season and was on track to conclude his rehab process around mid-March. While he didn't specify, it's likely the screw he had removed in January initially was inserted back in 2016 when the wideout suffered a season-ending foot injury at Ole Miss. He missed a lot of practice time in 2021 with the left foot popping up as an issue again, but Metcalf doesn't think it had too much impact on his performance, nor does he sound especially worried about the rehab process impacting his preparation for 2022. He did have a disappointing 2021 campaign by most standards, albeit with a dozen touchdowns to soften the blow of 336 fewer receiving yards than the previous year.
Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson Wants to explore options
Sun, Jan 16, 2022, 8:36 AM
Wilson hasn't demanded a trade from the Seahawks, but sources close to the quarterback indicate that he wants to explore other possible options to see if another team can put him in a better position to win another championship, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Though Wilson said in one of his final press conferences of the season that he hopes to remain with Seattle in 2022, the quarterback sounds as though he's open to the possibility of being dealt if he can go to a team that has a more promising outlook than the Seahawks, who are coming off a 7-10 season. With that in mind, Wilson looks like he'll be following a script similar to last offseason, when he never formally requested a trade yet still had his agent provide the Seahawks' front office with a list of four teams he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause for. Mike Garofolo of NFL Network reported last weekend that at this stage, the Seahawks have no plans to trade Wilson, who has two years remaining on his contract.
Colby Parkinson
Colby Parkinson Just five catches in second season
Fri, Jan 14, 2022, 1:12 PM
Parkinson caught five passes (eight targets) for 33 yards over 14 games during the 2021 season.
Analysis: Parkinson re-injured his foot in August and ended up missing the first three games of the season as a result. He rarely played when both Gerald Everett and Will Dissly were healthy, as he averaged just four offensive snaps between Weeks 6 and 15. The 6-foot-7, 251-pound tight end was decently productive in college but simply hasn't made an impact at the NFL level. Both Everett and Dissly will be free agents in March. Dissly will likely stick around, but a pass-catching role could open up if Everett walks. Parkinson will likely face competition in training camp regardless.
Dee Eskridge
D'Wayne Eskridge Dismal rookie season
Fri, Jan 14, 2022, 12:59 PM
Eskridge posted 10 receptions (20 targets) for 64 yards and a touchdown and four rushes for 59 yards over 10 games during his 2021 season.
Analysis: Eskridge missed seven games with a concussion and played more than 50 percent of the offensive snaps just once, averaging 18.9 snaps per game. The rookie second-round pick basically split the Seahawks' No. 3 wideout snaps with Freddie Swain, and neither player managed to distinguish himself. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he expects Eskridge to be "a really impactful player" next year. Carroll will need to be creative to get Eskridge involved considering Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf handle the bulk of the passing-game work, but Eskridge has shown flashes in the run game. He'll likely be viewed as a late-round sleeper next season.
