Signed by Houston
Tue, May 10, 2022, 12:14 PM
The Texans signed Hughes on Tuesday, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports.
Analysis: Hughes has missed only one game since 2011, but his production has dropped in recent years. Regardless, the veteran should still garner a solid role for the Texans in 2022.
Kevin Hogan
Kevin Hogan Inks deal with Houston
Wed, May 4, 2022, 3:50 PM
Hogan agreed to a contract with the Texans on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN.
Analysis: Hogan was cut by the Titans on Sunday, so it didn't take long for the six-year veteran to find a new home. Since being selected in the fifth round of the 2016 Draft, Hogan has bounced around the league, also spending time with the Browns, Commanders, Broncos and Bengals, while appearing in nine career games. Hogan will likely compete against Kyle Allen and Jeff Driskel for backup duties to Davis Mills.
Scottie Phillips
Scottie Phillips Clears Waivers
Tue, May 3, 2022, 6:22 PM
Phillips was reverted to IR after clearing waivers Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Phillips suited up three times for the Texans last season, getting six carries for 13 yards, and securing two of three targets for nine yards. His season was cut short due to an ankle injury in Week 9 against Miami that sent him to IR, and he never returned. The 24-year-old will be forced to miss the 2022 season, but he'll look to return strong in 2023 and earn an NFL roster spot.
Signs two-year deal with Houston
Tue, May 3, 2022, 11:46 AM
The Texans signed Addison to a two-year contract Monday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Addison appeared in every game for the Bills last year and recorded six sacks. The veteran defensive end will once again be coached by Jacques Cesaire, who also moved from Buffalo to Houston this offseason.
Has option picked up
Mon, May 2, 2022, 11:00 PM
Houston picked up the fifth-year option on Howard's rookie contract Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Howard is now under contract for the next two seasons following Monday's transaction. He's expected to open the 2022 campaign as a starter on the offensive line.
Headed to Houston
Mon, May 2, 2022, 4:59 PM
Green signed a one-year contract with the Texans on Monday, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Green spent the first four years of his career in Seattle, after being selected in the third round of the 2018 Draft. Last season, Green compiled 48 tackles (27 solo), 6.5 sacks and four passes defensed, which were all career highs, in 17 games. The USC product played a significant role on the Seahawks' defensive line in 2021 and figures to do the same next season for the Texans.
Steady tackle heads to Houston
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 3:50 PM
The Texans selected Deculus in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 205th overall.
Analysis: Deculus stands out as an experienced right tackle after starting for four seasons at LSU against SEC competition. He has long arms and solid/modest athleticism, so he should be a reliable backup at the next level.
H-Town bound
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 2:16 PM
The Texans selected Quitoriano in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 170th overall.
Analysis: Quitoriano wasn't heavily utilized in the passing game at Oregon State but he was efficient when targeted, catching 40 of 54 career targets for 512 yards and six touchdowns. He has a basketball background and could just be scratching the surface of what he can be on the gridiron. He gives Houston a more conventionally sized option at tight end behind Brevin Jordan.
Houston adds in fourth round
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 11:19 AM
The Texans selected Pierce in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 107th overall.
Analysis: Pierce is only a middling NFL running back prospect out of Florida, but opportunity is at least as important as talent in fantasy football, and Pierce has an enormous opportunity awaiting him on a Houston roster that badly lacks running back talent otherwise. As much as Rex Burkhead and Marlon Mack can't be brushed aside, they're about as weak of a 1-2 punch as any tandem in the league. Pierce (5-foot-10, 218 pounds) offers a denser, more powerful running style than either of Burkhead or Mack, and at Florida he consistently showed the ability to anchor against tacklers and keep moving forward against contact. He lacks speed -- he probably plays slower than the 4.59-second 40 he logged at the combine -- but Pierce should be Houston's best short-yardage runner at the least.
John Metchie ACL trending in positive direction
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 9:43 AM
Metchie, who tore his ACL back in December, expects to be "full go" by July, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
Analysis: While general manager Nick Caserio underscored the team wouldn't rush along Metchie's progress, the timeline seems to fit a comment made last month by the Alabama product suggesting he'd receive medical clearance by June. It's likely the 2022 second-round pick slowly assimilates into the offense with the goal of eventually joining the starting lineup toward the middle portions of the regular season, but getting practice reps all throughout the preseason could be a critical part of Metchie's development ahead of his rookie campaign.
H-Town bound

The Texans selected Harris in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 75th overall.
Analysis: The former inside linebacker for Alabama will head to Houston to play for Lovie Smith. Harris, like most Crimson Tide products, was a highly touted recruit who developed into a force in the middle of their defense. He is a sure tackler who can get after the passer or disrupt in the backfield when needed, as evidenced by his 10.0 career sacks and 27 tackles for loss. Harris is small for an NFL inside linebacker at 6-foot, but he managed to boost his weight from the 226 pounds he clocked at the combine to 235 pounds for his pro day. Despite the smaller size, Harris can go sideline to sideline with his 4.44 speed in the 40. He can play anywhere in Houston's linebacking corps.
Heading to Lone Star State
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 7:12 PM
The Texans selected Metchie (knee) in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 44th overall.
Analysis: Metchie suffered a torn ACL on Dec. 4, so his status will be worth monitoring when training camp approaches. The former Alabama star previously expressed hope he might receive clearance to return to the field in June, and if that comes to pass, then he should be on track to push for a significant role, even as a rookie. The Texans have Brandin Cooks at the top of the depth chart and Nico Collins might be their main boundary receiver, but Metchie could pick up most of the WR3 reps on a Texans team that figures to play plenty of catch-up. He produced 151 receptions for 2,058 yards and 14 touchdowns on 212 targets over the last two years (71.2 percent catch rate, 9.7 yards per target).
Stays in Lone Star State
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 6:33 PM
The Texans selected Pitre in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 37th overall.
Analysis: Houston picks up another in-state product in Pitre out of Baylor. Pitre is built like a corner at 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds and has plenty of coverage ability despite being a safety. He has strong short-area quickness (6.74-second three-cone drill) that allows him to turn and recover when he gets beat. Pitre also is a willing tackler who made 60 or more stops in each of his last two seasons at Baylor. He'll challenge for snaps in Lovie Smith's defense right away.
Staying in Lone Star State
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 8:53 PM
The Texans selected Green in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 15th overall.
Analysis: The Texas native and Texas A&M Aggie is staying in his home state as he links up with Houston to become the first guard off the board in this year's class. Green was a two-time consensus All-American at Texas A&M and projects to be an anchor at one of the guard spots, but he has some experience at tackle that could make him a versatile piece for the Texans.
Taken third by Houston
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 7:31 PM
The Texans selected Stingley in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, third overall.
Analysis: Houston could have gone in several different directions with this pick but ultimately landed on the extremely talented corner out of LSU. Stingley was a key cog in the team's secondary as a true freshman, snaring six interceptions as part of one of the best college teams of the century. The following two years did not go as smoothly as he did not register an interception the rest of his career and was limited to just three games in 2021 due to a Lisfranc injury. Now healthy, Stingley has all the tools to be a lockdown corner on the outside at 6-foot, 190 pounds with 4.44 speed and impressive metrics in the vertical and broad jumps at his pro day. Stingley's playmaking ability and sticky coverage skills made him the best cornerback prospect in the class and he will be an instant impact player in the Houston defense.
Inks with Houston
Wed, Apr 13, 2022, 11:01 AM
Nelson signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Texans on Wednesday, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Nelson officially links up with Houston one day after visiting with the team. The veteran cornerback started all 16 of his appearances with the Eagles in 2021, across which span he compiled 50 tackles (34 solo), seven passes defensed and one interception. He could be in the mix to open Week 1 as a starter on the outside.
Davis Mills
Davis Mills Seems to have coach's confidence
Mon, Apr 11, 2022, 12:53 PM
Texans coach Lovie Smith said Monday that Mills is the team's quarterback, while offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton used the term "potentially our starting quarterback," Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: The 2021 third-round pick won just two of 11 starts last season, but both came in the final five weeks -- a stretch where he completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 7.4 YPA with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions. While he may have done enough to earn his shot as the Week 1 starter, Mills doesn't offer much fantasy upside for single-QB leagues, as he rarely runs (18 carries for 44 yards last year) and is stuck on one of the worst rosters in the NFL. The Texans have had a quiet offseason in terms of veteran additions, mostly settling for discount additions like RB Marlon Mack and WR DaeSean Hamilton. They did sign Brandin Cooks to an extension, locking in Mills' favorite target from last year, and the draft will bring more talent after trades netted Houston extra picks in Rounds 1, 3 and 4. The problem for Mills is that one of those picks could be a QB who threatens his starting spot, be it this summer or later down the line.
Brandin Cooks
Brandin Cooks Earns two-year extension
Thu, Apr 7, 2022, 6:16 PM
The Texans and Cooks agreed to a two-year contract extension Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The move puts to bed rumors that Cooks could be on the move this offseason and locks him in with Houston through the 2024 season. Only 28 years old, he's been a member of four organizations in his eight-year career, going for at least 1,000 yards in six of the last seven seasons and surpassing the 80-catch mark four times during that span. Cooks will continue to serve as the unquestioned No. 1 option for the Texans' passing game moving forward.
Marlon Mack
Marlon Mack Heading to Houston
Fri, Apr 1, 2022, 6:20 PM
The Texans and Mack agreed to a contract Friday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: A fourth-round pick of the Colts in 2017, Mack worked his way to the top of the depth chart at running back in his second and third seasons, combining for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground between 2018 and 2019. Indianapolis then selected Jonathan Taylor in the second round of the 2020 Draft, which was followed by Mack tearing his Achilles in Week 1 of that campaign. Mack only appeared in six games last year, averaging 3.6 yards on his 28 carries, and otherwise was a healthy scratch after Week 8, a late-season bout on the reserve/COVID-19 list aside. In Houston, he'll vie for slotting in the backfield with Rex Burkhead, Royce Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale.
DaeSean Hamilton
DaeSean Hamilton Signs with Texans
Mon, Mar 28, 2022, 2:12 PM
Hamilton signed a one-year contract with the Texans on Monday.
Analysis: Hamilton had a consistent role for the Broncos across the first three seasons of his career, but he sustained a torn ACL last May that forced him to miss the 2021 campaign. He's now healthy ahead of offseason activities as he prepares to compete for a role with Houston. The 27-year-old secured 23 of 44 targets for 293 yards and two touchdowns during the 2020 season and will compete with Nico Collins, Chris Conley and Chris Moore for targets behind Brandin Cooks (knee) heading into 2022.
