Marquez Callaway Recovering from thumb surgery
Callaway had offseason surgery on his thumb, Nader Mirfiq of Rare Media Live reports.
Analysis: Callaway has plenty of time to recover before training camp, at which point he'll likely be in the mix for the Saints' second or third wideout spot. Michael Thomas is expected to come back as the far-and-away No. 1, with Callaway and Deonte Harris the current favorites to earn key roles behind Thomas among the team's holdovers from 2021. While he fell far short of the summer hype, Callaway did finish last season with a respectable 46-698-6 receiving line on 84 targets, making him the leading receiver for one of the league's worst passing attacks.
Marquez Callaway Underwhelming production in 2021
Callaway caught 46 of 84 targets for 698 yards and six touchdowns over 17 games in 2021.
Analysis: With Michael Thomas (ankle) on the shelf all season, Callaway consistently handled heavy snap counts for New Orleans both before and after Tre'Quan Smith made his season debut in Week 7. However, the 6-foot-2 receiver only ran a route on 53 percent of his snaps and he was only targeted on 19.5 percent of his routes - less than each of Deonte Harris, Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram, Ty Montgomery and Adam Trautman. While Callaway still put together a couple of nice games this year, this underwhelming usage led to inconsistent stat lines that made him hard to trust in fantasy lineups. Unless the Saints get a dramatic upgrade at quarterback in the offseason, things could get worse for Callaway in 2022 with Thomas set to reprise his role as the team's undisputed top option at receiver.
