Gibaut signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Gibaut missed the vast majority of 2024 due to forearm and calf injuries, and he was non-tendered by the Reds earlier this winter. The 31-year-old reliever owns a 3.77 ERA over 112.1 innings since joining the Reds in 2022, and he'll attempt to work his way back into Cincinnati's bullpen during spring training.
Ian Gibaut Picks up third save
Gibaut tossed a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Despite having already worked both Friday and Saturday, Gibaut was called upon Sunday to close out the game in favor of closer Alexis Diaz, who worked the eighth and had allowed seven runs in his previous two appearances. The save was Gibaut's third of the season. With the Reds' playoff hopes now hanging on by a thread and considering the recent struggles by Diaz, it will be interesting to see if Gibaut or another reliever can pose as a threat to the closer's role the rest of the way.
